4 steps to make browsing the web tolerable again
Gone are the days when websites focused their attention on their content. Today, 9 out of 10 pages are so littered with ads, they’re almost unreadable. (Mine included). Well, heres how to make all that crap go away, in 4 easy steps.
Get Firefox: If you’ve read any of my other entries, you already know what side I’m on in the browser-wars. Internet Explorer is unuseable. Opera is a viable alternative, but it does not have a decent solution for Steps 2 and 3.
Get the Adblock extension: Firefox will prevent popups on its own, but with out this little beauty, you still have to deal with all those “Shoot the monkey” and “Which one of these celebrities is Eminem” ads. So click the link, scroll down past the “Link” header, click install. You’ll be warned about allowing a third-party extension to be installed, just accept, Adblock is good people.
Get Adblock updater: This is the actual list of ads to filter out for Adblock. It’s another extension, so go ahead and accept, and install it. Why isn’t this included in Adblock itself? I don’t know, but I bet the reasons are legal.
Disable Java: I hate, nay, I despise Java. The only thing I hate more than the programming language itself is people who use it to make banners that have watery reflections. Woo, welcome to 1996. So, to avoid that, and any Java ads that may be circulating out there, follow these steps: In Firefox, click the “Tools” menu, in between “Bookmarks” and “Help”. Go to “Content”. Uncheck the box next to “Enable Java”. Click ok.
That’s it! Close Firefox, restart it, and you should find your overall web-surfing/browsing experience much more enjoyable. Of course, people who rely on their ad revenue will now probably be gunning for me.
