I know what you’re thinking already, why would anybody need more than 2 gigabytes of space for email? Well, why would anybody need more than 640k of ram?
Truth be told, I’m nowhere near filled in my Gmail inbox. However, if you’re anything like me, you get an uneasy feeling in the pit of your stomach everytime you break in to the double-digit percentages of usage. You’d delete your new nephew’s baby pictures just to get back down to 9%.
Well, there are several ways you can whack it up to have virtually unlimited email space, this just happens to be the one I use, and I like.
Step 1: Register a new Gmail address.
Invite yourself and register a new address. I like to use usernamearchived@gmail.com.
Step 2: Set up forwarding.
On your original account, go to the Settings menu and "Forwarding and POP". Enter your new email address in the text field after "Forward a copy of incoming email to:". Select "keep Gmail’s copy in the inbox" from the drop-down.
Step 3: Test
Send a quick email to yourself, log out, log in to your new account, and make sure it was forwarded okay.
The idea here is as you receive new email in your original account, once you’re through with it, you delete it. You don’t have to worry about losing important data, as all your email is being forwarded to the other address. Then, if at some point the usernamearchived@gmail.com address gets filled, you can always register another and start the whole process over again. If you plan on going through several 2 gigabyte accounts, you might consider changing the name of the new account to include a date, like a year. That way, at the end of each year you can move on to a new account, when you need to find a piece of email from 2003, you just log in and search usernamearchived2003@gmail.com.
