All power to forward thrusters
Now that you’ve defined your idea of “success”, and set your goal, the only thing left to do is apply 110% of your resources, brain power, time, energy and mental faculties to achieving it. Steve Pavlina wrote an exceedingly insightful article on Overwhelming Force. That is, utilizing enough resources to not only achieve your goal, but to completely dominate it.
I have found that this method works best, because more often than not you not only achieve your goal, but far surpass it. There is no better motivation to keep on than reaching a goal you’ve set for yourself.
And in the slow times
Human nature insures that your interest in your goal, achieving success, will likely wax and wane. We have limited attention spans, and we have been programmed to think in the here and now, not planning or considering for the future. A good remedy for losing interest in your goal is to keep an index card with you at all times, on it write your goal, and the reasons why you first set out to achieve it in the first place.
Each morning when you wake, read over this card. Each evening before bed, do the same. Throughout the day whenever you have a free moment, pull it out and read over it. Be sure to read it, and understand the meanings of the words, don’t just recite it. A good tip for avoiding the inclination to turn it in to a mindless chant is to keep several index cards, each with the same general reasons, but rewritten in different ways. It may also help to actually write (not type) the reasons, and your goal, several times each day This forces you to read the words for what they mean, and not just rattle them off.
Persistence of vision
The more you can keep your goals, and your reasons for setting your goals in mind, the more likely you are to take actions that bring you closer to achieving them.
Try to use your shortcomings to your advantage. If, by nature, you’re a lazy person and your goal is to set up a small business that will generate you passive income, realize and remind yourself that once its profitable you’ll be able to be lazy as much as you like. You will have much much more free time than you currently do now.
Keep those goals in mind, keep striving for them, and before you realize it you’ll be a lot closer to completion than you ever expected.
